Yan Jihuan's face paled further, her complexion grew ashy. In the end, she couldn't hold back anymore and sobbed quietly on the bed, large droplets of tears streaming down her face. Jin Renguang had never seen Yan Jihuan cry so pitifully before. In his memory, she was always strong, dependable and cheerful. 

"If you don't want to see me anymore, I will resign." He hardened his heart to say, shocking her out of her soul.

"NO!" Yan Jihuan exclaimed in panic. "Y—You…You are the best soldier I have ever seen! Brother Jin, you're born to be in the Special Forces. Please don't…don't throw it away…"

Jin Renguang sighed and his jumbled heart finally softened slightly. After all, this was his closest comrade who had gone through life and death situations with him countless times throughout the years. He approached her and wiped her tears, his brows furrowing. "…Sorry." Except for sorry, he didn't know what to say.

It was on that day that Jin Renguang felt vividly how much of a jerk and scum he was. He owed Yan Jihuan a lot, and if he had to take a bullet for her in their future mission, he would. He swore it to himself.

They parted on bad terms that day and fortunately, there wasn't any subsequent summon in the next few weeks, allowing Jin Renguang to avoid her as much as possible. Things would have been buried just like that if not for Yan Jihuan suddenly came to him two months later with a report in her hand, her expression dazed. "Brother Jin…I—I am pregnant."

If this wasn't what was called the sky crashing down onto his head, he didn't know what else. Jin Renguang held the report, his eyes raking through each word, yet none registered in his mind. The only thing he could see was the bold ink of 'Pregnancy Confirmed', presenting the harsh truth in front of him. One that might be too much for him to shoulder.

Jin Renguang grew up upholding tight principles. Yes, he lived his teenage life recklessly, stirring down the wrong path and hanging out with those delinquents all day. If not for Ru Meiqi, there wouldn't be Jin Renguang today. However, he prided himself for being a principled man. He had bottom lines which he wouldn't cross even with the price of his life, and one of them included cheating.

Now that he received this report, he could no longer escape. He had created a new life, just like how he imagined himself to be. This would undoubtedly be one of the happiest moments in his life, if only the person who conceived his child was Ru Meiqi.

His lover was wrong, the person whom he wanted to hear this from wasn't her. His life slowly went haywire, everything was spiraling down to an unwanted path. He had no way to make it right except for gritting his teeth and advancing forward step by step.

Even years later, he could still recall how anguished Ru Meiqi's expression was when he broke the news to her. Yes, anguished. There was no other word that could explain it. They had clearly planned to settle down when Jin Renguang turned thirty—that was, two years later. And now, he came and said that he had impregnated another woman and ought to take responsibility for her?

"You're lying…right?" Ru Meiqi asked, still in a state of disbelief and denial. Nevertheless, tears had started streaming down her face, because she knew Jin Renguang too well to discern that he wouldn't joke on something like this. Moreover, the man's twisted expression had further dispelled her hope until there was practically nothing left.

"Sorry, Qiqi…I'm sorry…" Jin Renguang kneeled in front of her, head hung low. The back of his eyes stung and he had a strong urge to cry. But the pride of a man held him back. He had never cried for as long as he could remember, and this time too, even when his eyes were bloodshot, the tears still refused to fall. "Don't cry, it's my fault. Qiqi, don't cry…"

"Renguang…" Ru Meiqi laughed blankly. "Please tell me it's all a lie, hmm? I beg you…"

Jin Renguang clenched his fists so hard that his nails pierced through the flesh and drew blood. He was such a talented, skilled and prideful man. Yet in front of Ru Meiqi, he was only a desperate man who sought his lover's forgiveness. "You can beat me, slap me, you can even stab me. I will receive it all."

Ru Meiqi laughed again, one that was too painful for him to hear.

Her hands hung limply by her side, trembling ever so slightly. How could she beat, slap or even stab him? She had exerted all of her strength just to remain standing. She loved this man so much, too much that she trusted him wholeheartedly, too much that she handed her heart for him to cherish. Yet, it was all trampled to pieces in the end. 

It hurt, even at this moment, she still stupidly wished that he would suddenly laugh and tell her that it was a mere joke. Anything. Anything was better than this.

Jin Renguang would have felt a bit better if Ru Meiqi vented her anger and sadness by hurting him. He would even receive curses and condemnation. The more the better. Killing him was also okay. Yet she's not. She had always been the most ruthless woman, able to deliver the sharpest spear into his heart.

Without saying anything, she turned around to leave.

"Qiqi—!" Jin Renguang rose in reflex, but in the end, he realized he had no right to stop her anymore.

Ru Meiqi halted, she wiped her tears and decided to give Jin Renguang the brightest smile she could offer. No matter how much agony she was in, she refused to show it in front of him. God knew how hard it was for her to speak in a light and airy tone. All she wanted to do was to hug him.

But in the end, rationality still won over her.

She was Ru Meiqi, and she definitely wouldn't collapse just because of a broken heart. She was worth more than that.

"Officer Jin, I wish you a happy marriage."

"No…" Jin Renguang shook his head, tears welled up in his eyes. "Don't say it, please..."

"Live happily ever after with Officer Yan and treasure your child, be a good father…just like how you say you would be to my children."

"RU MEIQI!" Her smiling visage became a blur, so beautiful and dazzling. It was exactly that smile that made Jin Renguang fall head over heels for her, and now, she used the exact smile to bid him a farewell that might last forever.

Jin Renguang's mind snapped as he stumbled to chase after her, his whole body trembling violently.

But she had disappeared.

Since that day, it was as if Ru Meiqi had vanished from the surface of Earth.
