Chapter 259 The glimpse of the past II

"Gosh..." Biting her lower lip, Lexi mumbled. She didn't have the intention to answer the call honestly, but the noise it was producing was adding to her anxiousness while waiting for him.

Just then, the phone's screen suddenly lit up along with the faint notification sound. Instinctively, her pair of eyes shifted to the screen and saw something that made her stiffen in an instant. It says:

[From: Miss Chen

It's me, see you tonight

Lexi just blankly stared at it for the longest time. Even when the screen turned black again, she could no longer avert her eyes anywhere else as her mind went into a complete daze while her heart was slowly being clamped so much that it seemed to have had spikes tossed into it.

'Miss Chen...? Tonight...?' She was rendered speechless as words that had built up on her throat— slowly began choking her… as it got tighter and tighter until her breathing turned into heavy, arduous and arrhythmic that it had made it hard for her to breathe.

Lexi could not discern the overwhelming emotions surging like a tidal wave inside her whole being. Hence, she didn't notice that Morris Liu was back with some documents and a small box.

"Lexi..." He lowly called out seeing her in a daze before his eyes caught the spare phone he usually left at home.

Upon catching what's in her hand, Morris Liu's eyes darkened as he strode towards her and violently turned her to face him— which effectively snapped her back to reality.

"A— Uh— I— your phone!" Stuttering as she was having a tough time producing words or even a single coherent thought at this point, Lexi, who was in a panic-stricken state, pushed her hand to him that was holding the smartphone.

"Sorry, it kept on ringing but I didn't answer— I just wanted it to stop, here. I should go." Trying to sound normal before she would completely break down in front of him, Lexi hurriedly reached for his free hand and placed the phone in it.

Without another word, she walked in a rapid manner causing her to stagger in her steps as she grabbed her handbag and coat. 'No, no, no... not in front of him.' She repeated over and over again inside her head.

However, just as she was half sprinting on her way out, Morris Liu pressed the phone's lock button that revealed the misleading message. His hand instantly tightened as if attempting to crush the phone into tiny pieces.

"Lexi." However, no matter how painful it is for their relationship, Morris Liu decided to lead her on and make her believe whatever she wanted to believe.

"About—"

"No, it's fine. I know she's just a friend no need to worry that I will misunderstand haha!" She paused for a moment and without turning to face him, Lexi forced her lips to smile despite the phenomena that had been happening around her which was slowly breaking heart, she then resumed attempting to leave before she broke down.

His eyes darkened and in just a few huge steps, Morris Liu reached the rushing woman and grabbed her arm to stop her. "Listen to me!"

"I am not! Lalalala!" Lexi profusely shook her head sideways as she continuously made loud noises to prevent herself from hearing whatever that would come out from his mouth.

"Lexi! This we have to stop— I like someone else!" Through his gritted teeth, the first person who got hurt by saying such words that would surely break her heart into pieces was him— pulverizing his already powdered heart. Still, she was getting too stubborn and it drives him mad with Kong Shuren watching his every move and every word he utters.

Upon hearing his loud announcement that was akin to a resounding slap, Lexi stopped. Not just her nonsensical chants but her world stopped. The pain that was on her arms caused by his tight grip, she couldn't even feel it anymore as the angst in her heart was enough to numb her.

"You what? Like someone else?" Knitting her brows, Lexi repeated his words with great effort. The moment he answered "yes" with a guilty look plastered across his face, her heart split in half... no, into tiny particles that were minced even further afterward.

"Let's break the engagement— I can't continue with it. I love Mia."

'I love you but we can't continue it or else I might completely lose you.' At the same time as he had uttered those three words, Morris Liu uttered the complete opposite of what he spatted verbally within his mind. However, in the next moment, Morris Liu never expected what she did after the last word landed.

*PAK!*

A loud, resonating slap approached his cheek that had made his head toss violently to the side. The slap was so hard that the sound bounced across the whole place. Slowly, he returned his gaze onto her now wrathful front.

"You dare to say to me to break our engagement because of her? Huh..." Lexi scoffed as torment, dismay, and rage gradually chopped the pieces of her heart even further. Maybe this was her way of crying at this moment, it was hard to really tell.

"Cheater..." She mumbled, locking her resentful eyes on him. "I won't let a cheater be happy. Keep that woman hidden— far away from my sight. I won't break the engagement and let you two live happily ever after. You don't deserve it." With that said note, Lexi strongly pulled away her arm from him letting out another scoff.

As she turned her back against him and took a step forward, she paused and said, "I will forever make her the mistress and make you miserable for the rest of your life for marrying the person you don't love." Lexi vindicated before resuming in her stride with great determination to not fall apart.

God knows that no matter how fierce Lexi was when she left him, the moment she arrived at her car, she was screaming, bawling her heart out, all the while driving crazily fast without a care for her life.

Mia Chen watched the group of medical staff that rushed towards Morris Liu's lying figure through the transparent glass. Unending worry engulfed her heart seeing them doing everything they could to stabilize his irregular vitals.

"What's happening?" Just then, Chris Yu's voice rang behind her as his pair of eyes darted to her back and then to Morris Liu's withering figure.

"No, no, please..." Mia Chen mumbled worriedly as she ignored Chris Yu and never took her gaze away from Morris Liu.

"Hey," Sensing her panic, Chris Yu placed his hand on her shoulder to make her turn to face him. "He will be alright, yes..." He too was anxious as Morris Liu had been peaceful for the past three months but all of a sudden, his vitals went down from a normal range which alarmed his attending doctors and nurses. Still, he didn't want to think any negative thoughts as he believed he would survive this crisis like always.

"I saw his finger move earlier but why is he—" Mia Chen heedlessly clutched her trembling fist on his shirt as tears formed on the side of her eyes.

"It's okay, it's okay," Pulling her to him, Chris Yu embraced her to calm her shaking being. "He'll be fine." He hushed her as he turned towards Morris Liu's direction again.

Soon, the doctors stopped whatever measures they were doing as the patient's vitals returned to normal and within the next several seconds, Morris Liu's eyes slowly opened.

"L—Le...xi..." Those were his first words despite the ventilator on him and how dry his throat was at that moment causing a burning sensation. He mouthed her name before submitting to the darkness that he had been surrounded by in the last three months.
