My (Monster?) Hero Life

Chapter 122: Sneaking Out

Chapter 122: Sneaking Out

Lorget clung to Kace as though his life depended on it. The wind rushed up his dress and through his hair. Or at least it would if he had any. He squeezed his eyes shut in a panic. Every now and then he would feel a sudden 'dip' in their height before they began to swing again. 'I am never doing this again!' He solemnly swore to himself.

Kace flinched as he felt the goblins nails dig into the skin of his neck. 'I swear I'll drop you!' He complained as he continued to manoeuver between the castles outcrops of towers and balconies. When they were close to the ground, he let go of his latest Spider Thread. Allowing them to drop the rest of the way.

The second his toes touched the ground he dumped Lorget on his arse. The goblin let out a muffled grunt as he reached to rub his behind. It felt as though it had gone numb from the impact. As he shot a dirty look towards Kace, he realised that he was waiting for him. The look on Kace's face gave him the distinct impression that if he did not move it, something bad would happen.

While making low key grumbling noises under his breath, Logret struggled to his feet and took a look around to get his bearings. 'Hmph, I guess we saved some time.' He did not want to admit it, but by his reckoning, it should have taken them at least two hours to sneak out of the castle safely. Instead, the journey down from the window took about five minutes.

Logret dashed towards the walls that encircled the castle area. Leaving Kace to follow at his own pace. He just was not comfortable without being close to any shadows. His own was excluded from that. There was only so much he would be able to achieve if he only had his own to rely on if something went awry.

With his back now pressed against the cold stone, he began to pant from the short sprint. 'Now let's see how well he could keep up.' He looked towards the direction he had come from, but Kace was nowhere to be seen. He raised his eyebrows in surprise and confusion. 'Where the fuck did he go?' He thought as he restlessly searched the open area before him.

"Psst! Up here! I thought we were in a hurry?" Kace said loud enough to get Logret's attention.

As the goblin looked up to the source of the voice, he found Kace casually sitting on the top of the wall. Logret immediately began to panic. 'He's trying to get us caught!' It was true that Kace was being overly obvious. He did not even bother to attempt to keep himself hidden as he sat there with a bored expression.

Kace cast his Spider Thread, latching onto the goblin he yanked him up to the top of the wall. Logret hissed when landed, becoming angry with how brazen Kace was being. That was until he looked around. The guards that he had been afraid of were nowhere to be seen!

"Don't worry. I timed our descent for a blind spot in their patrols. We're in a hurry after all." Kace smirked as he said this. "Now are we going to move this along? I don't have much time before somebody notices I'm missing after all."

Logret could only sigh in response. He was certain that Kace was doing all of this just to torment him. 'I guess that part of him is goblin-like at least. Logret beckoned for Kace to follow him as leapt to the roof of the nearest building. Kace was genuinely surprised at the nimbleness and sure-footed nature of Logret. 'He reminds me of Durz.' Kace thought as he recalled those fond memories.

As they raced along the rooftop only making short stops now and then to avoid being seen, Kace realised he was thinking about the 'family' he had left behind in Stonefall more and more with each passing day. 'I hope it's not a sign that something bad has happened to them.' Kace thought as he became increasingly worried about their safety.

'It's been over a year since we left. Hopefully, Shagrat and Vaskra have managed to keep it all under control. The bright side is that the heroes seemed more interested in me than retaking the town. Then again, they might have sent others to take it back. I definitely need to check up on the situation when I return.' Kace imagined a couple of different scenarios that might have played out.

It concerned for him that it seemed like only weaker heroes had been sent before, He understood this now after having travelled the world for some time. With their failure, though and the casualties from the battle, why would they not send a stronger force? 'Maybe if I can get this Shadow and his tribe on my side I can get them to help out Stonefall. Though I don't know if they'll be much help.'

Kace was even more aware of the inherent weakness of goblins. They were known to be one of the weakest monsters, after all. Still, he had a soft place in heart for the little guys. They were the first ones to take him in as one of their own in this new world.

Before he knew it, they had reached the city's final wall. He had been too busy reminiscing that he had not noticed how much progress they had made until he was looking out at the barren wasteland in front of the city walls. At this moment, he felt a sudden influx of grief permeating his mind. Needless to say, it was coming from Sylvan's consciousness.

Kace felt sorry for his loss, and seeing the damage the heroes had caused was certain to bring back painful memories. 'I'm sorry, Sylvan. We'll definitely make them pay for everything.' Although there was no response, Kace felt the grief subside a little. 'Now, let's meet this Shadow...'
